Where do I register or purchase an eText for use on the iPad?

The registration for access to your eText must be done in a browser on your Mac or Windows personal computer and not in the eText app. This needs to be done prior to attempting to access any titles on the app. Please go to the course registration web site as directed by your instructor to enter your authorization codes or to set up a username if you are a first time registrant.

What are the differences between Mac/Windows, iPad, and Android versions of an eText?

The same eText title can generally be accessed across all three platforms.  User personalizations (Notes, highlights, etc.) are generally available no matter what device the student or instructor uses. Pearson eTexts on all three platforms offer similar features but have user interfaces designed specifically for each device. Some minor device-specific differences include:

  • Chapter Download: The option to download chapters for offline use is available for Android and iPad only.  It is not available on the Mac/Windows client.
  • Study Groups: The ability to share notes with members of a study group using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technology is available only on the iPad client and is not available on the Android or Mac/Windows clients.
  • Flash Assets: The ability to view rich media content built with Adobe Flash is only available on Mac/Windows. Adobe Flash media is automatically disabled when viewed on the Android or iPad client.
  • Whiteboard Mode: Support for Whiteboard mode is available only on the Mac/Windows client.

What iPad-specific functionality is used in the Pearson eText apps?

The eText apps have been developed specifically to take full advantage of the technologies that Apple designed for the iPad. You can “swipe” to move from one page to another. Users can “pinch” to reduce magnification and “spread” to increase magnification. The apps use the built-in accelerometer to auto-sense the orientation of the iPad so it can be rotated from portrait to landscape view automatically. We utilize the iPad’s capability to store the username and password to allow the user to instantly return to their books without re-entering their credentials.

Do the iPad eText titles interoperate with the Mac and Windows titles?

The eText titles that are accessed on the iPad will be the same titles that a user accesses from the eText server today on their Mac or Windows browser-based client. Your notes, highlights, bookmarks and search history are all stored in our eText online database such that no matter which version you use, they will be both available and synchronized.

Note: Not all titles are available on the iPad.

The answer depends on which app you are using.

Some of Pearson’s Learning Platforms make extensive use of Flash technology so that they will not operate in the Safari browser on the iPad. There are some MyLab and Mastering web sites that do not require Flash and hence may be capable of working on the iPad in the Safari browser.

If your MyLab or Mastering web site does function in mobile Safari and you can navigate to the eText link, it will automatically detect that you are using Safari on the iPad then present you an “interstitial page.” This web page will include a link to launch the Pearson eText app and give you access to the title on the iPad if it is available after logging in to the app.

Troubleshooting

Why do I receive the error message "Invalid Username or Password ..." when I try to log in?

The error message, "Your Username/Password is incorrect or your titles are not yet available for the iPad", appears because the username and password combination you entered is incorrect or because the eText for which you are registered is not yet available in the eText for iPad app.

You can view a list of available iPad eText titles at http://media.pearsoncmg.com/ab/etext_ipad_titles/.

If you are using this app, you can check whether your Username and Password are correct using the Login Name and Password Assistance page. (This is not available for the Campus or Schools apps.)

I signed out of the app and now I can’t get back in. How do I regain access?

The answer depends on which app you are using.

Pearson eText AppPearson eText
If you sign out of the Pearson eText app and try to work while your iPad is not connected to the Internet, you will not be able to sign in to the Pearson eText app because authentication must occur while you are online. To access your bookshelf, re-connect your iPad to the Internet and then re-launch the eText app and sign in. Generally, there is no need to sign out of the app. Keep your eText app signed-in before you take your iPad offline and you’ll still be able to access your eText bookshelf while offline!
